Treatment of wastewater from laboratories in Universities, Colleges, and Schools is the most challenging task for scientists. It is a well-known fact that laboratory wastes particularly in the Chemistry lab involve several toxic and hazardous chemicals including mineral acids like hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid. These acids, alkalis, and other chemicals come out with wastewater and if disposed directly to the environment without neutralization, not only degrades the underground water quality but also deteriorates the soil quality drastically when exposed for a prolonged period of time. It is important to note that 1 ml of laboratory-grade acid requires approximately 20000 liters of water to neutralize without the addition of a neutralizer. Traditionally chemical process designs, focus on minimizing cost, while the environmental impact of a process is often overlooked. It is possible to reduce the generation of these wastes and their environmental impact by modifying the design of the process.
