Mentor name: Dr. Waseem Raja Associate Professor Agronomy FoA, SKUAST-K Background:  Rice is the major irrigated crop in Kashmir valley.  Presently different irrigation scheduling methods adopted by the farmers have low water use efficiency.  Proper irrigation scheduling in paddy can save thousands of cubic meters of water during peak crop growing season. Commonly used methods for irrigation scheduling: • Soil Indicator (Feel and appearance, soil moisture monitoring using gravimetric method, neutron probe, TDR, FDR or Soil moisture tension measurement using tensiometer). • Climatological Approach (IW/CPE Ratio; Ratio between the depth of irrigation water and cumulative evaporation). • Plant Indices Approach (Visual plant symptoms including colour of plants, curling and rolling of leaves, wilting of leaves). All these methods of irrigation scheduling are cumbersome and costly hence development of low cost and user friendly equipment for irrigation scheduling is the need of the hour.
