Hand-Knotted carpets are liked and appreciated by not only connoisseurs of art and craft but also by others who have an eye for beauty. This is because of very attractive designs with fascinating colour combinations and the way knots (loops ). of yarns are weaved and fixed to form the pile on its surface (a complicated process , hot copied by a machine so far).A master craftsman , called " Naqqaash " deciphers a design of interest for a carpet manually point by point and prepares detailed instructions for weaving of knots i.e. looping of coloured threads around warp threads and their fixing ^popularly called "hand-knotting" . These instructions basically include information on colour and respective number of knots at each location of the entire design surface. At present this is a very specialized job done only by very few individuals . The process is not only slow , tiresome and monopolistic but is a sort of conservative in the sense that it does not accommodate. any new designs and patterns or innovations.In the process developed under this invention , a simple system consisting of a low cost digital camera , a typical computer system and a colour printer, a design of interest is captured by the camera and after conversion into 256-colour system, suitable preprocessing and analysis , it is clustered into 31 colours as named in Kashmiri carpet weaving and papier machie work with the number of pixels or colour threads at each point of the image surface . This information is printed in colour code form which forms the instructions (Taeleem) for handknotting process .The same procedure is repeated for clustering colours into 36 common English names and colour code information (Taeleem) prepared accordingly.The generated code is easily readable and the process of code generation is instantaneous . This code can be compact and weaver friendly to read and is recited or narrated in Kashmiri and English in a pre-recorded voice or a voice of choice in any other language. The simplified colour prints of code and its narration in a voice of your choice / liking would indeed transform the carpet weaving workplace into a more pleasing and enjoyable ambience . The s/w provides a facility to pre-view the carpet surface design with its colour combinations before it is actually weaved and option to change colour combination as per customer"s choice. The s/w also accommodates a design of customer"s choice which may be beyond classical / traditional design patterns.This truly makes the customer a partner in the design effort and enable him to get a product of his personal choice rather than select one from ready-made stock of products. This does not increase the manufacturing cost but provides a huge amount of customer satisfaction of possessing a self-designed object of desire or choice. This paradigm shift from "ready-made carpets" to customer-directed /designed carpets would provide trade and business enhancement for carpet industry.
